One of the best hikes I've ever been on. From the top it’s also terrible. Camp Nelson was initially a 4th choice of the available north of Ponderosa trails, but it did not disappoint. Its between two private roads I accidentally walked into both those roads looking for the trail haha. These trails provide opportunities for viewing a beautiful central Kentucky landscape and stretching your legs, while learning about various sites that made up the busy and complex Camp Nelson supply depot. 6614 Old Danville Road Oh man, hope Chris didn’t get carsick again after pulling over! Fort Jones, with its extensive stone revetment walls, is one of the best-preserved Civil War forts in the state. The last mile to Quaking Aspen is a workout. The Camp Nelson trail was my favorite trail during my trip to the Sequoia National Forest. Sort of Apple to Orange comparison. I parked just at the closed campground gate on Nelson Road. the incline got a little rough but such beautiful little waterfalls all over the trail. Park grounds are open daily, dawn to dusk. I didn’t listen we walked up and about half ways up decided we were tired and turned around. Love this easy hike, Wonderful beauty & solitude amongst the Giant Sequoia, It was a wonderful trail that became something of a 2-day adventure for us in our search of a Giant Sequoia that I had adopted and had the latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates for. Hiked it with my 5 and 7 year old with ease. My 5 star rating is for the trail itself, not hike on the road leading up the trail ,which is a far less interesting route through some rental cabins.

Like others have mentioned this trail is not really marked at the beginning so find the log bridge and start going that direction. Ask fellow travelers and attraction managers your top questions. The trail also passes by the officer’s spring with its dry-laid limestone retaining walls and footbridge built as a Boy Scout project.
