My teacher teaches out of his home?
Traditionally, Chinese martial arts were taught at a home or by a doctor of Chinese medicine. Recently, schools operate as businesses with retail spaces. Determine the teacher's level of skill by asking lots of questions about the length of time teaching, the number of students, his own teacher and, perhaps, asking to observe a class.
What lineage is best?
All schools of Wing Chun discuss forward intention, relaxation and structure. Schools will vary on the way that the form is demonstrated. Schools will emphasize chi development, power or mental force, or technique. Depending on your depth of study, each will school will produce a better, faster and stronger you.
My teacher does not speak English?
Of course, it is easier to learn if both you and the teacher speak the same language. But, Wing Chun is also a sensory martial art so the feeling cannot be explained. It has to be experienced by the individual.
Do I have to spar?
Chi Sao begins with single sticky hands. This exercise introduces you to the idea of using the basic hand positions, involving wrist on wrist contact, in Wing Chun to rotate, defend and attack. Once you have mastered this idea on the left and right side of your body, you can move on to sensing movements during rolling hands. If you can tolerate your wrist touching another human being, then you can do chi sao.
Is Wing Chun a women's martial art?
Wing Chun was founded by Ng Mui, a female nun and martial artist. The history of Wing Chun is a bit shaky; but, I have read that she worked with four or five other Shaolin priests to devise a new martial art, incorporating ideas from traditional Shaolin kung fu, which typically takes 10 - 30 years to learn. The new martial art was supposed to prepare sound fighters in five years.
